about

First off, if you hate the vocals (understandable) just let me know because I have a purely instrumental version available.

-----

This song is messy. I mean really, all of these demos are since they're done within the frame of one week (sometimes more), but for how much work I put into this one it feels even more so.

Marionette is a culmination of a few different ideas. I wouldn't say I'm proud of the lyrics, but I'm not embarrassed by them either. They're self indulgent, grouse-y and honest. When your brain occupies a certain part of your head long enough it's good to get that stuff out. Oh and it's worth pointing out, one of the melodies in the middle is a reference to a The Receiving End Of Sirens song. As are the lyrics.

Vocally, this song is all over the place. I tried singing in a few different styles. I think some parts are fun, others I can hear things with promise and others still are just. Well they just are.

Instrumentally this song developed from a riff I wasn't fond of at all, but for some reason was determined to make work. It felt much too pop punk for my tastes, so I tweaked and developed it to the point where... it still very much feels like pop punk. But I like it now and that's all I really care about.

As far as the ending goes, did you know you can scream into a guitar's pick ups and it'll actually come through the amp?

lyrics

Anchors and millstones hung around my neck
I could use a hole in my head
I can't compete with death
I am the fifth horseman that everyone forgets.
You were the gallows I got hung up on
The hook that tore straight through the side of my mouth
(I feel like I've been robbed, it's a disgusting thought)

I hid your memory under my mattress and saved it til further notice.
Wrapped up in greed, tried to make you family
Cold lips, they move like marionettes.

You heard the voice of God, but it was less impressive than you thought,
