about

It's been a bit since I've posted a fresh track. This has been much to my chagrin.

For this comeback of sorts I thought it'd be fun to try and do something a little different.

There are no refrains at all in this song, at all. Only one chord progression is repeated and even then there are different melodies on top of it.

Why would I do this? Probably stubbornness and a growing allergy to repetition in songs, particularly ones I write. But also because I wanted to tell a story through music as efficiently as possible. If you write a movie and you have characters constantly reiterating information you're going to get complaints right? Why should a story song be any different? Each line should reveal something new about the characters or their situations.

Here's the irony: while I worked hard on the lyrics, I couldn't manage to sing them well enough for them to be clearly understandable. Not to say I didn't work to sing my best, I did. I screeched it all out as well as I could, but for the most part my voice was uncooperative (my own fault I'm sure).

So I hope whomever listens to this takes the time to read along with the lyrics posted below. Everything in this song is done for a reason to convey something in the story, from the riffs to the vocal delivery (cleans vs. screaming) .

lyrics

Transatlantic, give or take a few seas
Trials of chemotherapy to struggle and beat.
Wrestling IVs out of veins to just snag one more final "goodbye"
(Things dribbled from youthful lips)
Collecting dogtags throughout firefights
(They hit the ground and make it slick)

Indicator lights, enhancing vital signs, pointing to remission.
Nervous anticipation for the arrival home, hoping there's been no toll.

Smooth skin hidden underneath thousands of fibers
Thousand yard stare racking focus when tired,
On an image that prevented being hopeless.
Every strand when unnoticed.

An afternoon in late May, families to gather celebrate.

A few months in but only nine months out. The Hell it took to get here worth it now.
Wake in a cold sweat to a nightmare in the bed, linens all bloodied traced around swollen legs.
Through a window that feels just like a looking glass, read the physician and break in half.

It takes less than a year, it draws to a close so quietly at night.
Empty bedsides.
Attempts at moving on more feeble than the minuscule heart beat.
No false hope hides underneath.
